Nelson’s Journey supports children and young people, under the age of 18, in Norfolk, who have experienced the death of a significant person in their lives. We have just celebrated our 20th birthday, and have supported thousands of children since the charity started in 1997. In 2017 we received 952 referrals, our busiest year yet.
Nelson’s Journey helps through providing coping mechanisms for children to deal with their challenging emotions, ways to remember the person who died and an opportunity to establish open lines of communication within the family. Nelson’s Journey aims to bring back smiles to bereaved children, whilst recognising that bereavement is a journey that will last a lifetime, and something you never ‘get over’. By giving children and young people tools to cope, they hope they will move forward positively with their lives, able to embrace the opportunities that come their way.
Nelson’s Journey supports families through 1:1 sessions, youth-style NJ Clubs, therapeutic Residential Weekends and Activity Days at Hilltop Outdoor Centre and training for professionals that work with children. Whilst their face-to-face work is based in Norfolk, they also have a free interactive Smartphone bereavement app which can be accessed, for free, internationally. Search ‘Smiles & Tears’ on your app store to download.
